What Massachusetts law says about licensing a boarding kennel or daycare, pets nobody picks up, and rabies. Checked November 2, 2026.
State license
State law requires a kennel license from your city or town clerk, and it covers boarding and daycare. An animal control officer must inspect before it's issued and each year after; the town sets the fee.
Vets only
The law covers only veterinarians: 10 days after notice by registered or certified mail, return receipt requested. A non-vet kennel is not covered, so ask an attorney before rehoming an unclaimed pet.
Required
Dogs 6 months and older must be vaccinated, and you must get proof before accepting a dog.
Statewide boarding rules under Ollie's Law were targeted for June 2026, but whether they are final was not verified.
